Workshop with Experts: “Hospital Management in the 4.0 Technological Era: Necessary Skills and Knowledge to be a Good Manager”

Last May 21st, School of Management - UEH College of Business (COB) - organized a workshop with the theme “Hospital Management in the 4.0 Technological Era: Necessary Skills and Knowledge to be a Good Manager”. The workshop had the participation of experts and more than 30 delegates who are general directors, managers, specialists on information technology, quality, communication, risk management of hospitals, health care institutions, lecturers, and managers at relevant corporates in the field of health care and medical management. 

The workshop with the theme “Hospital Management in the 4.0 Technological Era: Necessary Skills and Knowledge to be a Good Manager” within the framework of the implementation of constructing the curricula of the master’s program in Hospital Management with the contributions of 10 experts having expertise in this field and a round discussion table on 4 main topics as follows:

  • Building the curricula of the master's program in Hospital Management;
  • Digitalizing and applying information technology in hospital management;
  • Quality management in the health care system;
  • Building the internship program in hospital management at the master's level.

Opening the presentations of the experts, Dr. Tran Thi Thanh Phuong - Director of the Hospital Management Program at the Bachelor’s level, comprehended the demand for study, international standards, and curricula of the hospital management at the master’s level. Afterwards, Master Dang Thanh Hung - Head of the Department of Information Technology of the Children’s Hospital 1, presented a talk on “Applying digitalization in hospital management through the lens of realistic activities of the Children’s Hospital 1”. To illustrate more clearly its applications, Master Luong Cong Minh - Head of Department of Quality Management of Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital - provided realistic cases regarding quality management and information technology skills by the cases of Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital and impacts on the quality advanced process of the hospital. Finally, Dr. Ngo Gia Luong - Lecturer at Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine shared further information concrning the Lean technique in hospital management.

Speakers presented in detail issues surrounding hospital management intensively in management and operation. During the program, guests were led by the speakers with their attractive and interesting stories and real experience. These talks were integrated with theories and realistic illustrations.

Prof. Nguyen Duy Phong - Vice Dean at Public Health and Head of Department of Community Health, University of Medicine and Pharmacy HCMC, Master Phan Van Truong - Deputy Director of Community Health Care Center CHAC, Master Dang Thanh Hung - Head of Department of Information Technology of Children’s Hospital 1; Master Luong Cong Minh - Head of Department of Quality Management of Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital; Master Tran Chau Hoa - Head of Department of Risk Management, Hoan My Medical Group, Master Trinh Minh Quoc - Pediatric Intensive Care and Toxic Management Department & General Planning Department of 115 Hospital, Master Nguyen Bao Thang - Department of Social Affair of An Binh Hospital, Mr. Bui Thai Thu - General Director of Medijob Vietnam Medical Human Resource Development Company Limited, Dr. Ngo Gia Luong - Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine. The round discussion table took place under the moderation of Master - Medical Doctor To Phuoc Hai - Dean of Department of Gastroenterology, An Binh Hospital.

Opening the discussion session, Dr. Le Quoc Su shared his experience in hospital management which is dynamic for the private sector. He assumed that the hospital management major of UEH referred to diverse international sources, with a competent team of lecturers, and curricula contents adapting to the requirements of employers. Nevertheless, Dr. Su mentioned the need for positioning specific objectives, middle-level, and high-level operations of the operation management program. Learners are required to be aware of the organizational structure of hospitals to obtain planned targets, visions, and missions. Directors are those who have the expertise and control the operation effectively. The increasing number of private hospitals raises the demand for middle-level and high-level operation managers who are business-minded and understand intensively finance both in its quality and quantity. The program demands the creation of learners’ experiences and applying knowledge-to-reality skills.

Additionally, all the guest speakers and moderators respectively raised their ideas and discussed their perspectives in the round discussion table session.

During the workshop, the topic “Upgrading quality management and digital applications” concerned and attracted lots of contributive ideas. Medical Doctor Nguyen Hai Nam - Deputy Head of the Office of HCMC Department of Health, informed that the strong digitalization, policies, and laws are essentially added to the curriculum. Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Duy Phong - Vice Dean at the Department of Public Health and Head of Department of Community Health, University of Medicine and Pharmacy HCMC - supposed that, currently, the market economy is increasing and the relationship between doctors and patients has many intermediaries participating in the middle of the service providing process to raise the satisfaction of customers. In contrast, Master Phan Van Truong - Deputy Director of Community Health Care Center CHAC - emphasized that the program needs the disciplinary connections between management and medicine in the workplace, managers have to have problem-solving skills and be quickly responsive to specializations. Master Tran Chau Hoa - Head of Department of Risk Management, Hoan My Medical Group – also commented that hospital risk management remains new and essential, thus, we need to combine teaching with quality management on safety for patients, and hospitals should innovate the job of risk management on strategies, finance, and integrated operation in IT and management.
