UEH Data Science Students Publishing 3 Research Articles in Scopus

Nguyen Quoc Viet - a Data Science student at the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH) - excellently published 3 research projects in the prestigious international journal index of Scopus.

Being admitted to the Data Science program of the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH) with the highest score and awarded an excellent scholarship from UEH of Nguyen Quoc Viet are the greatest achievements in the 2021 admission period. At that time, for Viet, Data Science was rather strange.

Although Generation Z (those born from 1997 to 2012) was exposed to computers, the internet, and smartphones very early, and concepts listed as "data and information" are no longer strange, questions like "What is Data Science?", "What are the requirements of the Data Science program?", "Where to study Data Science?", etc. are something that worries Viet.

After nearly 3 years studying at UEH, Viet has become more aware of the major and obtained many impressive achievements. Viet published 03 articles with reputable international publishers in Scopus: Springer (Germany) and World Scientific (Singapore). The first work is regarding applying deep learning techniques in stock price forecasting. The second work is concerning applying deep learning to predict user reviews on popular e-commerce platforms in Vietnam. The third work is on clustering and automatic label generation for banking data. In addition, Viet won an award in the "Young Researcher 2023" organized by UEH and presented his research results at thematic international conferences.

In a talk with Viet, he could not hide his joy and pride in his achievements. Viet stated that he loved this major very much. Regarding data science, it is suitable for those who have a foundation in logical thinking and a passion for learning. During your study, you will learn about programming, math knowledge, especially statistics, and related fields in technology and its applications. When hearing about Math, many of you will be hesitant; however, Viet stated that Math in Data Science helped him better understand how models work. This sort of Math knowledge is complicated for those who want to study higher. At the applied level, it is not that difficult. Data Science is necessary in most fields of business, science - technology, industry, agriculture, health, society and so on; therefore, career opportunities in this field of study are in high demand.

Mentioning future directions, Viet confirmed that his upcoming plan with members of his research group at the IDA lab (Intelligent Data Analytics) under the guidance of their instructor is to try to publish 2 more articles in Scopus (a publication index of Elsevier, Netherlands) or ISI (Web of Science, a publication index of Clarivate Analytics, USA) before graduation.

“I like the number 5, it's a beautiful number. I also like to research the topic of language models applied in chatbots or virtual assistant tools listed  as OpenAI's GPT or Google's Gemini. In my research group, there is Ms. Ha, a batch preceding mine, also the first batch of this major at UEH, and already graduated. She published an article in Scopus and is currently working in data processing and as an analysis at Momo (the company that owns the e-wallet of the same name with the largest number of users in Vietnam)" - Quoc Viet shared.

With an IELTS score of 8.0, Viet shared that he planned to apply for a master's scholarship related to Data Science abroad after graduation. He aimed to find a new challenge to conquer, to gain experience, and to prepare for future work.

Data Science (applied direction) at UEH - Choosing to master the digital technology race

Developed according to UEH's Technology and Applied Computing orientation, the Data Science program was launched to anticipate the explosion of big data with the strong development of Cloud Computing, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Blockchain, Augmented Reality (AR), Internet of Things (IoTs).

Data science is the science of managing and analyzing data to find insights, actionable knowledge, and action-led decisions. Data science consists of three main parts: (i) initializing and managing data, (ii) analyzing data, and (iii) turning analytical results into actionable value. The analysis and use of analytical results rely on three sources of knowledge: (i) mathematical statistics, (ii) computer science, and (iii) knowledge of specific applications. The knowledge areas of data science include Data mining, Statistics, Machine learning, Analysis, and Programming.

UEH's Data Science program aims to provide learners with the necessary knowledge and skills to become experts and managers in the field of data science. Learners are competent to participate in data-related work, including planning, collecting, pre-processing data (especially big data), and applying data management models, statistical methods, machine learning methods, and data analysis tools to solve economic, business, and management problems. In addition, students are equipped with foreign language skills, supplemented with background knowledge related to economics, and continuously updated with the latest standards and data technologies to improve quality and increase the ability to integrate and meet the increasing needs of businesses in the context of the digital economy.

Wide career prospects and desirable salaries in the Data Science industry

After graduating from Data Science, students will have a variety of different job options:

- Data Analyst in businesses in E-commerce, marketing, finance and banking, telecommunications, etc.;

- Data Engineer at technology enterprises and production businesses with data departments or centers;

- Specialist or manager of data science projects (Data scientist);

- Expert in researching and applying data science solutions in business and enterprise management.
