UEH successfully completes second year of Jean Monnet Module on EU Sustainable Development – EU4Sustainability Project

05 Aug, 2025

Ho Chi Minh City, 1 August 2025 – The University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH University) proudly reports the successful completion of the second year of its Jean Monnet Module project, titled “Sustainable Development in the European Union: Jean Monnet Interdisciplinary Module.” The project, launched in 2023 and funded by the European Union under the Jean Monnet Actions of the Erasmus+ Programme, continues to strengthen UEH’s global academic engagement and commitment to sustainability education.

From January to July 2025, the second year of the module witnessed vibrant participation from students and faculty alike, with a total of seven interdisciplinary courses delivered by distinguished UEH lecturers and international scholars. Each course welcomed 18 to 25 undergraduate and postgraduate students, fostering in-depth learning and interactive discussions in a cross-cultural academic environment.

The courses offered during this period include:

1. Sustainable Development as a Global Trend (January 2025): This course introduced students to key global sustainability challenges and frameworks, setting the stage for a critical understanding of sustainable development beyond regional contexts.

2. Sustainable Development Goals in European Agenda (February 2025): Focusing on how the EU embeds the UN’s SDGs into its internal and external policies, students explored policy alignment, implementation practices, and measurable outcomes.

3. EU Sustainable Finance and Investment (March 2025): Participants examined the EU’s strategies to mobilize private and public capital toward sustainable activities, including the taxonomy regulation and green bond standards.

4. The European Sustainable Society as Research Item (April 2025): In this research-oriented course, students investigated the components of a sustainable society through European lenses, emphasizing innovation, equity, and resilience.

5. Sustainable Development in EU External Relations (May 2025): This module analyzed how the EU integrates sustainability into its diplomatic, trade, and development cooperation strategies, reinforcing its role as a global sustainability actor.

6. Sustainable Development and General Principles of EU Law (June 2025): Students explored the legal foundations supporting sustainability in the EU, including case studies on environmental law, precautionary principles, and legal coherence.

7. The EU Green Deal: Prospects and Challenges (July 2025): As a highlight of the curriculum, this course critically examined the European Green Deal—its goals, institutional framework, transition pathways, and geopolitical implications.

These academic offerings provided students with a comprehensive understanding of the EU’s multidimensional approach to sustainable development, equipping them with the analytical tools and interdisciplinary knowledge to engage in sustainability efforts both locally and globally.

Each thematic course was delivered across four separate class sections, ensuring that the learning experience reached a wide range of students. In total, more than 500 students participated in the sustainability-focused courses under the EU4Sustainability project during this academic cycle. The lectures were jointly conducted by UEH faculty members and distinguished guest lecturers from Centro Universitário Integrado (Brazil), offering both local and international perspectives.

Throughout the sessions, students engaged in active and dynamic discussions, demonstrating a strong interest in both the theoretical and practical aspects of sustainable development. Many students posed thoughtful questions related to real-world applications and academic research practices in Europe, particularly regarding how sustainability is implemented across sectors such as finance, governance, and law. These conversations not only enriched the classroom experience but also fostered greater curiosity and cross-cultural academic exchange among participants.

The success of the second project year reaffirms UEH’s dedication to internationalization, academic excellence, and sustainability integration across disciplines. As the Jean Monnet Module enters its third and final year, UEH remains committed to deepening its impact through broader outreach, increased stakeholder engagement, and continued collaboration with European partners.
