On the afternoon of May 22, 2026, at Room A207, Campus A (59C Nguyen Dinh Chieu, Xuan Hoa Ward), the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH) hosted a high-level reception and working session with a delegation from Western Sydney University (WSU), Australia. The meeting contributed to strengthening and deepening the strategic partnership between the two institutions.
Attending the reception, from the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City, were: Assoc. Prof. Bui Quang Hung – UEH President; Prof. Dr. Nguyen Dong Phong – Chairman of the UEH Strategic Council; Prof. Dr. Su Dinh Thanh – Chairman of the Science and Training Council; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Ha Minh Quan – Rector of UEH.ISB Honours College; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Duong Phuong Thao - Acting Deputy Head of the Department of Research - Development and Global Engagement; and Dr. Phan Thi Minh Thu – Project Director of Western Sydney Vietnam.
From Western Sydney University (WSU), the attendees included: Prof. Deborah Sweeney – Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice President, Research, Enterprise and Global; Dr. Nicolene Murdoch – Pro Vice-Chancellor, Global Partnerships; Dr. Douglas Foster – Provost of WSU Vietnam; and Dr. Tim Hall – Deputy Provost of WSU Vietnam.
Overview of the reception
Opening the working session, Assoc. Prof. Bui Quang Hung, UEH President, delivered a welcome speech and expressed pride in their enduring journey together. He affirmed that the long-standing strategic relationship with WSU is the most solid foundation in the university's internationalization strategy. Looking ahead, UEH wishes to further tighten this relationship to optimize its international impact.
In response, the WSU delegation expressed their delight and extended warm congratulations to the newly appointed leadership of UEH and the development of the UEH Nexus Campus Nha Trang. The WSU side also respectfully extended a formal invitation for UEH leadership to visit the Western Sydney campus in Australia in the near future.

The discussion focused on acknowledging the strong growth and achievements of the program over the years, affirming the robustness of the current cooperative relationship. Accordingly, UEH and WSU agreed to continue maintaining and developing the strengths of existing joint programs in the fields of Business and Applied Data Science. At the same time, the meeting actively discussed opportunities to expand the program portfolio in Vietnam through open exchanges of perspectives and updates on new educational trends.

Notably, both sides agreed to expand cooperation through discussions on a joint PhD training program. This interdisciplinary PhD program promises to open a highly potential path for both faculty members and learners. The WSU side committed to actively supporting UEH in the effective application and utilization of international research funding sources, creating a solid stepping stone to enhance the university's overall scientific research capacity.
In addition to training activities, scientific research is also a strategic focus discussed in depth by the two universities. UEH and WSU committed to promoting joint research activities and high-quality international publications, while closely coordinating in developing funding applications from major international research funds. The WSU leadership affirmed its comprehensive support for the academic staff of both UEH and WSU in research projects applied practically for local government needs.

Furthermore, to strongly promote global student exchange activities and provide practical experiences, UEH proposed receiving and coordinating internship programs of approximately three months in Vietnam exclusively for WSU students. This is an opportunity for WSU students to gain early exposure to the practical business environment in Vietnam.
Finally, both sides committed to expanding training scale, tightening university-industry relationships, and promoting academic research at UEH's new branch in Khanh Hoa.
The working session concluded with the UEH Flag Journey ceremony between the two universities, honoring their spirit of connection over the past two decades and looking forward to new development milestones.
